Circle Singing with Kappé Rousseau

Circle Singing is collective vocal improvisation: making stuff up and singing it together on the fly.
The facilitator creates melodies and sings them to sections of the circle. Layers of harmonies, rhythms, counter rhythms spring up with no written music. Participants will get the experience of hearing their part as an integral piece of the whole experience. The facilitator offers the pulse, feel and vibe of the flow of emotion.

My passion for musical creativity started at an early age when I became bored with piano lessons. I had to ‘practice’ or at least ‘play’ the piano every day for an hour. I started making things up – changing things up and re-arranging the music. Later in life, I lived in NYC for a time and I created a business of ‘arranging’ music for artists who were looking to attract interest in their songs. I can hear where the music is going in my head and then lay it out, or play it out.
I’ve played professionally as part of a group and solo for years. I have a background in classical/orchestral performance in percussion. My main instrument is piano and I am just as comfortable with guitar in open tunings. I have a BA in Music from U.C. Berkeley. My background in Circle Singing is from Oakland California and the Circle Singing team of Bobby McFerrin. I decided to bring Circle Singing anywhere I can so that people can experience the power of the collective voice and also tap deeply into their inner being and soul and SING!

Quiet the Noise ~ Hear Your Direction: A Guided, Experiential Workshop with Kappé Rousseau

There’s a quieter knowing within you – not loud, not urgent, but steady.
In the midst of constant input, expectations, and internal dialogue, it can be easy to lose connection with it. This workshop offers a space to pause, to step out of the noise, and to reconnect with what is already there.
This is not a lecture. It is a guided experience.
Through simple, body-based practices, you will be invited to: slow down and settle into your body, notice your inner experience with greater clarity, stay present with what arises, reconnect with a sense of internal steadiness, listen for the subtle direction within you, Your Inner Compass
You may leave with a deeper sense of presence, greater clarity in your direction, a felt connection to yourself, a simple way to return to this state in daily life.
This workshop is for you if…you feel pulled in many directions, you’ve been trying to think your way forward, you’re ready to listen more deeply, you sense there is something within you waiting to be heard.

Contemplative Dance Practice with Miriam Wolodarski

Contemplative Dance Practice (CDP) is a dancer’s meditation hall / a meditator’s dance hall. Based on the work of dancer and choreographer Barbara Dilley, the practice offers an array of tools to help us become aware of the movement of both body and mind. Through meditation we notice and focus, through movement we become alive and engaged, and through improvisational play we practice dropping our social mask, tuning to each other and our environment in new ways. The sessions consist of three parts: first, sitting meditation, in which we practice noticing the movement of the mind, and guiding our awareness. Second, facilitated personal awareness practice, in which we practice asking our body what it needs, letting go of ambition in favor of sensation and curiosity. Third, a series of improvisations in which we expand our awareness out into space to notice what is calling us, attending to the emergence of arrangements of time and space, relationships, influences, images, or emotions. The sessions are for all bodies; everyone is welcome to join, regardless of past movement experience.

Introduction to Contact Improvisation with Miriam Wolodarski

Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance form that centers our felt sense of somatic touch: weight, gravity, and momentum carry contact improvisors into a direct sensory experience of the body in space and time. CI can be meditative, playful, or athletic: to the observer, it may look like a mix of ballroom, wrestling, acrobatics, and contemporary dance. For the practitioner, it is an opportunity to experience the biomechanical poetry of human bodies colliding. This gentle and fun introductory class is accessible to bodies of all abilities.
